Rightmove at the heart of UK property transactions

Tuesday 5th March 2013

There was a sharp rise in the number of homebuyers visiting Rightmove.co.uk in 2012, with the website attracting 11 billion page views last year, up 18% from 9.3 billion page impressions in 2011, according the latest figures released by the company.

The company’s market share of the top three property websites continued at over 80%, giving agents access to the UK’s largest home-moving audience, which explains why more advertisers have invested more in additional advertising products on the website to further promote their property stock, increase brand awareness and communicate key messages.

These products now account for almost a third of all agent and new homes developer spend with Rightmove, and this spend has more than doubled in the past two years. This has helped overall revenue increase by 23% to £119.4 million, up from £97 million in 2011 with underlying operating profit up 26 per cent from £69.4 million in 2011 to £87.5 million in 2012.

The total number of advertisers has remained broadly stable year-on-year at 18,270.

Miles Shipside of Rightmove recently commented: “Our focus for the year ahead is to continue making investments which give Rightmove member agents the opportunity to gain a competitive edge in their local patch. To have kicked off 2013 by putting Rightmove advertisers in front such high levels of home-hunter activity marks a promising start to the year which we look forward to building on.”

Rightmove was recently ranked the sixth busiest website in the UK in January, after Facebook, Google, eBay, YouTube and Amazon, by Experian Hitwise, with traffic during the first six weeks of the year up by over 20 per cent.

Rightmove was originally created by some of the UK’s largest property and financial firms, including HBOS, Countrywide Assured and Royal & Sun Alliance, before floating on the stock market in 2006.

Nick McKittrick, incoming Chief Executive Officer of Rightmove, comments: “More than a decade of investment has established Rightmove as one of the UK’s most popular online brands.  We continue to invest in order to maintain our market-leading position and enable Rightmove members to promote their properties and brand in front of the most home movers.  We’ve seen an encouraging start to the year with record traffic and enquiries, and with a major new TV campaign launching next month, we’re looking forward to that continuing throughout 2013.”
